Monster Hunter is a 2020 fantasy/kaiju film produced, written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.  The film is based on the popular video game series originally developed by Capcom in 2004.  Anderson has been rumored to have interest in the project since 2012.  Starring his wife, Milla Jovovich, in their fifth movie as a director/star team, Monster Hunter delivers on the pace and action of other movies by these two, but lacks in story and execution.

Milla Jovovich is the undisputed queen of cheap sci-horror.  Although Kate Beckinsale’s Underworld character, Selene, is one of the sexiest characters in cinema history, Milla has done the monsters, zombies, apocalypse delight time and again, most notably in the Resident Evil franchise. She continues to deliver in this poor-man’s smoothie of Resident Evil, Wizard of Oz, and Preditor in a blender.

A team of modern soldiers, insurmountable odds, big bad monsters…what could go wrong?

This unfortunately is one of those movies that makes you question your investment 30 seconds in.  The opening sequence features cheap animation that doesn’t match the quality of the rest of the movie or any of the previous creations from these studios.

The scene is set in the first 30 minutes with zero explanation.  An ominous storm carries the military crew to another dimension (non-spoiler…shown in preview).  Nasty creatures stand between them and a return home, but time and resources are limited.

Jovovich’s character goes through a rough stream of challenges with bookended with flashy montages of fight training and monster ass-kicking along with a score of electronic beats akin to “Tron,” but more watered down.

As one of the first theatrical movies available in 2021, like the prickly poisonous creatures plaguing the screens, this one is hard to digest no matter how comfortable the recliners in the theater may be.

There’s a huge lack of story or character development.  The scenes are predictable.  BUT…if you can write off 103 minutes to blockbuster visuals and sound in an opportunity to be swept away from the real world to a fantasy dimension, buckle up and have a ride.  You are guaranteed to be swept away.
